Interested in Unit Studies?

Unit Studies are one of the blessings of homeschool. Take a child that "hates" school, ask him to study his favourite things (airplanes, helicopters, lizards) and use all the aspects of that subject to introduce the learning objectives for his learning or grade level and you have a new student who loves school.

Unit Studies are growning in popularity for good reason, children love them. They can be a bit time consuming to create on your own, but there are lots of resources out there to help you a long the way.

Try The Old School House Magazine's -- DownLoadNGo's. (Ok, it's a bit of a plug for the company I work for - Amelia Earhart, George Washington, Ben Franklin, Davy Crockett, Goofy Gecko, Twisting Tornados, Mother's Day, Chocolate Challenge, and Sunny Seashells are some of the ones I worked on.)

Second Language

For our second language (manditory here in BC starting grade 5) we choose Spanish. I have an Italian background and we have several friends who speak Spanish so we felt it was the most worth while. I did some comparisions of the different software out there and finally decided on "Tell Me More". It was recommended over Rosetta Stone for those who may wish to translate or do more advanced writing later. I found Rosetta Stone was "too easy", I could guess all the right answers but really didn't learn that much. Rosetta Stone makes you feel like you are learning Spanish, but I wanted a more indepth program. Tell Me More let's you do as much or as little grammer, reading, writing, dictation or speaking that you want. It has voice recognition software so you can "have a conversion" with the computer. VERY FUN!!!

For less expensive simple program try Rocket (See reviews on low cost programs.)
