Hello Elluminate Families!
I just wanted to thank you for a great day today!

It was great fun meeting you all again on Elluminate! And thanks so much to everyone who taught me many different computer tricks today!

Today we talked about Key Word Outlines and Taking Notes. :-) I have outlined your homework below. Your HOMEWORK for this week is:

Grades 1-3

1. Read the 'Swan In Love' paragraph below
2. Now go back over the same paragraph and underline or hi-light (either on computer or on a piece of paper) 3 Key Words for each sentence in the paragraph.
3. Copy, or have someone copy your underlined words onto the Key Word Outline Sheet (click to download) - there is one line for each sentence in the paragraph
4. Cover up the original paragraph
5. Using the Key Word Outline (KWO) to help you, 'TELL' the paragraph to one of your parents:
Look at the first three words on the KWO, then look up, make up a sentence in your mind, and tell your mom.
Look at the second set of three words, and then look up and tell your mom another sentence. Etc. Etc. until you get to the bottom of your Key Word Outline and have 'TOLD' the whole story

Grades 4-6

1. Read the 'Kitty Adoption' paragraph below
2. Now go back over the same paragraph and underline or hi-light (either on computer or on a piece of paper) 3 Key Words for each sentence in the paragraph

SWAN IN LOVE

In a German zoo there is a swan called Petra that is famous. In 2009 Petra fell in love with a big plastic swan-shaped paddle boat. It followed the boat wherever it went. It slept beside the boat at night. When winter came, it stayed with the big plastic boat instead of going South. Petra did not seem to notice that the boat had no feathers, and that it was very big. The people who work at the zoo are happy, now. Petra has found a new swan to love. It is a real, live, quacking swan that the Zooworkers have named Paul. Now Petra paddles along with Paul. The Swan Boat has been left behind at the zoo dock.

KITTY ADOPTION

Last September a baby squirrel in Missouri had a bad day. It fell out of its nest in a tree, and landed in the yard. The yard owner found it and did not know how to get it back to its squirrel mom. The lady decided to put the baby squirrel into the box where one of the lady’s cats just had kittens. The momma cat accepted the squirrel, adopted it and started feeding and taking care of it like it was one of her own kittens. Sometimes the squirrel started to move and the momma cat did not like where it was going. She would reach up and gently pull it back, and start licking and taking care of it like it was a kitten. Today, you can go visit this family and meet their unusual pet. You can pick up the squirrel and it will cuddle you like a kitten. If you pay close attention, you will hear that the squirrel has learned to purr like a cat.

Safe Driving

Last sunny August, a man in Australia was riding his motorbike down the freeway. It was garbage pickup day. He saw that someone had put a BBQ out on the curb to be picked up by the recyclers. The man decided to save some money and take the recycled BBQ home. He stuck his head through the hole in the frame and set off down the highway carrying the BBQ. Someone driving by him took a picture of him and sent the picture to the newspaper. The man was identified by the police who came to visit him. They fined the man eight hundred dollars for dangerous driving. He lost his driver’s license for a month. The BBQ never did light properly.
